1 is a genuinely bad game. I still love it for the main questline, but damn is it bad.

Idk if I would say it was bad. I enjoyed it a lot even the combat. I kind of wished they refined the heat mechanic instead of going full fps style.

Disagree, the RPG elements you are talking about is the clunky inventory that becomes pointless once you get colossus armor and weapons. You can obtain every class skill from leveling up so outside of picking your original class there are no character builds. I can see where the TC is coming from, the gameplay specifically has aged and there is a lot of combat in that game. Sure you get unlimited ammo but you are constantly fighting the cover system

Don't forget the skill changes. The mass effect 1 skill trees were just too much here's minor stat boost and every so often you unlocked an ability. Although Mass Effect 2 did completely gut both the skill trees and choices with equipment making there not many options and less interesting overall. Although it made it up with the build the crew focus. Mass Effect 3 did a great job bring back some of the lacking rpg elements.
