In Diablo II:

*finds amazing item*
"Yes!"
*picks it up*
*item is Ethereal* (which basically means it can't be repaired and is useless once it breaks)

It can be good for some items (that are Indestructible, repair their durability / replenish their quantity or are worth socketing with a Zod Rune, which makes them Indestructible), but other than that, it's bad.

Even worse is when you die in Hardcore mode (in which your character dies permanently), especially when it's due to the server lagging. If you have good items, they're gone. If you're a high level, all the Exp. is gone.
