It's gotten extremely bad. If my gf and I didn't have as much racked up as we do we wouldn't keep playing it it as our fuck around game. We mostly just do gridding here and there to try to maintain what we have for the next DLC that comes.
Even then it's easy to blow money on shit you'll never use again. There's this big ass plane that was the most expensive with the last update, I bought it accidentally mistaking it for another one that's a few hundred k less, and it's completely useless, I'll never use it again and it can't be sold.

If you don't have friends to play with for fucking around and the ability to glitch into a solo public lobby, don't bother with it. Luckily on PS4 there's an unpatchable way to do it, and on PC it's probably easy. Don't know what you'd do on Xbox though.

And just to put it into Shark Card numbers, I think the last DLC added 75m worth of stuff, which if you hypothetically just wanted to buy with real money would cost like $900.
