there are free streaming websites on the internet, why even use netflix or hulu?

I prefer having high quality, easily available subtitles, and for the content creators to actually be getting something for their work at least.

Question, and I'm not trying to troll here or sound brash, but bear with me.

Why do you (and so many people these days) prefer subtitles when watching stuff? I cannot fathom it.

(I am assuming that English is your first language -- if it's not your first language, then I totally get it, but the people I watch with speak English and have perfectly good hearing but they still want subtitles.)

Can't speak for TC but my older sister is deaf so I've always been used to CC or subtitles to a point where it's weird not to have it. And sometimes with things due to to accents, poor sound mixing, using shitty built in speakers, etc. Sometimes you can miss a word or something that was said.
I only like small font, white with a black outline, transparent background, and consistent positioning on the screen though.
If they're big, jumping around on the screen, or have the black bar background, colored subtitles, etc. It can be distracting and annoying. I understand what all those things can be needed for though. Like people visually impaired as well who need the added contrast of a black bar or larger text, or hearing impaired people needing them to move a bit for certain things for the sake of spacial awareness for what's happening.
