I haven't seen S2, for obvious reasons, but reflecting on S1.

Gimmicks:

-super powered kid who befriends kid from ET
-kid from ET
-outcast greaser
-teenagers encounter a dangerous scenario, do some of the dumbest crap imaginable and get out, unscathed. The scene in the forest with the greaser and the main guys sister. Straight out of horror movies of the 1990's.
-the timeline itself

The gimmicky part is the only reason it has it's popularity. Because people want to long for a bygone era. Once you cut that crap out, it's not anywhere near the level of writing seen in modern day TV shows.

I'm not sure you know what a gimmick is. All of the things you listed are fictional tropes.

The only possible "gimmick" here is the 80s setting because you might argue it's capitalizing on the current retro trend for 80s stuff, but as I said before all of that plays a relevant part so it transcends gimmick status. And I think it's a cut above modern day TV shows in most categories by a longshot. Like read any professional critics take on it, they tend to agree.

I mean, if you want to argue that we should never do period dramas that's a different argument, but it would be a silly one too.
