I've worked with people of all ages at both of my full-time jobs, making much less than $18, from people barely old enough to be legal adults through the middle-aged and elderly. And it's not like these people aren't smart or educated or capable, but you have to realize that not everyone ends up with a "real" career that promotes advancement. For a lot of people those types of positions just aren't available.
