They both hold significant political power which is exercised by voting on decisions.

The Senate was a quasi-hereditary body, dominated by a select elite called patricians that half-mythically traced themselves to the founding of Rome, that was for a large part of its history unelected, had minimal formal legislative powers, ruled an Empire even though all of its members were associated with a single city, had life tenure, and governed mostly through the sheer weight of the wealth, prestige, power, and antiquity of its individual members and families.

Meanwhile the American Senate holds half the legislative power of the federal government, are (now) elected by the citizens of the states to represent their interests, and has four year terms.
