you unlock a new area right from the beginning of the post game. that area has 100 moons. then you unlock extreme boss fights. once you have 500 moons you unlock the "last level". it's more of a boss rush than level. once you beat that you get to see the true ending. There are 835 moons, and you can get up to 999 moons via buying them at the store. (acutally you can buy all 879 moons in the store once you beat the game)

Besides that, the more moons you collect the more outfits will be available to buy at the store. They are just cosmetic, but some are really cool.

I know i sound like i'm bashing the game, but it's a really good game. i just don't think it's game of the year, 10/10 game, best mario game ever!
