Doing it at the expense of stuff people want to re-watch or see, especially from traditional cable series, will come back to bite them. Yep. They need established media to draw other viewers in. but i think Netflix is fucking PERFECT to do something like an Animorphs series, it could seriously cover every darn book in 5-6 seasons. Animorphs would never work for a film, and the '90s live action attempt was painfully low budget.
