My fiancee works in Coles and has been told by her management (off the books) to watch out for any aboriginal people who come into the store because they're probably going to steal something. This is so prevalent that you couldn't even report every instance of someone saying it.
again, in a lot of places, especially rural australia, this is an unfortunate but necessary warning. in some places you cant even get out of your car for a minute if there's teens around without them rushing over to steal from your car, or steal your car itself. you're pretty safe in cities though
Sure, and having worked in rural australia I know what that's like. I think what this ad attempted to convey (but utterly failed at) is how this kind of stereotyping carries over. This is a young professional woman just going about her daily life dealing with the same "kind of glue-snuffing, bag stealing junkie" attitude, which I think is definitely a problem.
I lived in Perth for 6 years, couldn't believe the shit people had no problem saying in open conversation.
ive lived in brisbane and surfers and they weren't that bad there. a little sure but not enough to warrant a commercial. must be far different in perth ---
