thundersheep 10/19/17 1:05:29 AM #169: | You could say that Science Fiction closes with a whimper, as Batter Up is easily the most lowkey track on the LP, but lyrically and thematically, I dont believe they could have ended the album, or their careers on any other tone. Its a song about resignation. The idea that depression, anxiety, unfulfillment, etc. are simply constants. No matter what youre able to accomplish these feelings will always remain, so you may as well brace yourself and get ready to face them. Batter up. Brand New is my favourite band. They were not my favourite band before this album was released. Ive never seen a band take so much care to end their narrative in a way that fans will appreciate, while also staying true to themselves, and the fact that they were able to do so at the height of their creative powers is what makes this album so astonishing. This isnt merely fan service. As with all of their previous albums, Science Fiction experiments with sounds theyve never used in the past and as a whole sounds distinct from anything theyve done before. They took on an entirely new sound and still managed to create the quintessential Brand New record. I dont even know how to end this, as long as Ive gone on, Ive still only scratched the surface on what this album is about, or why Ive found it so personally affecting when applied to my own life. This album gets all the superlatives. Its one of my all-time favourites and it earns my highest possible recommendation (along with the rest of their discography). Final Rating: 451/10 --- ...
