They probably don't want to be your friend because they've dealt with those types of students that then want them to make exceptions and give them grades that they don't deserve. If they think you're a good student, they'll likely be perfectly fine with writing a recommendation for you. They can't write a good recommendation for you if they don't know anything about you except the grade on one assignment. If you've only one assignment in one of this professor's classes so far then he's probably not the right person to ask for one. What do you want the recommendation for? That's how law school works. Most classes have little to no assignments and the class terminates with either a final exam or paper that are worth 90+% of the grade. I need recommenders for judicial clerkships. Did you do well on the paper? This is an exam class.
