It originally began with some fans thinking it's somewhat smart because of theory videos on the science as well as discussions on the philosophy. There is some degree to it being more than just nonsense humor, but some people go too far. Then people started making fun of it. In response, some people take it very far, but I believe it's satirical. (I think Pickle Rick was always done in jest for example). Now there's a huge thing of people pretending to be R&M sperglords, people hating it, pretending to hate it, it's a whole web.
