Try going to Germany or Japan and speak your first language, you will get the EXACT same reaction. Maybe Japan, but a lot of German people (including all of my relatives over there) speak English, and some of them are happy for an opportunity to practice it (like my cousins over there) Pretty much the entirety of Western Europe speaks English and has no problem doing so.
