The Wild Card Game is the equivalent of making the top 2 teams in a division play a one-game playoff to decide the division, every year, even when one team won way more in the regular season. I can't really discern a purpose for it other than to generate more ad revenue with an extra playoff game, and to punish the Wild Card winner. People didn't like the percentage of World Series won by WC teams or something. But that's because the WC winner under the old system was usually the 2nd or 3rd best team in the league, by regular season record. And given that they probably played in a strong division, in terms of team quality, maybe even better than the regular season record indicates.
