When my fiance and I were looking at homes earlier this year, I immediately crossed out any that had were part of a homeowners association.

Yeah, that's what I need in my life. An extra bill and some 75 year old man harassing me after work every day about some trivial thing.
No, Fuck that. No offense, but some of these old fogies have nothing better to do with their lives. They sit at home all day trying to remain relevant - and so they read every document with a fine tooth comb, and go after people who hang a four leaf clover on their door.

I take care of my property - as does my next door neighbor. We both mow and take care of our lawns, and if you do the research before you buy the property (aka - check out the status of the neighborhood) you won't have to worry about how your neighbors are taking care of things. The only thing I have to get done (next year prob) is have my drive-way re-paved. That was the only thing that needed to be "updated" to the outside property.

I would only join a HOA when I'm really old. Like, at least I wouldn't have to worry about shoveling snow or outside maintenance.
