Absolutely, but you didn't say "the government needs to shut down coca cola", or even "the government needs to create sanctions on the soft drink industry". Your argument was "the government needs to ban soft drinks", which is a few steps away from what I'd consider a practical solution.

I think for example how a lot of countries deal with the cigarette problem (like Australia) is a model we should follow. They didn't ban cigarettes. They just slowly and carefully made cigarettes an incredibly undesirable thing to buy, both through raising pricing, removing brand advertising, advertising the risk of cigarettes on every packet and stopping people from using cigarettes in public spaces.

What's happened is it's no longer cool to smoke. But you're still allowed to.

That would be an effective way to deal with soft drinks, in my opinion.
