Muslims in New York had a mosque since the 1970s but it was too small for their growing worshippers. So they bought a new bigger building. The building was close to Ground Zero so the conservative media got really fucking exicted and spread the news that they are building a mosque at ground zero of 9/11 and infuriated everyone. Got to the point where most of the American population actively opposed it and Obama was getting railed mercilessly for not stepping in and stopping it. In reality you can't actually see the mosque from Ground Zero unless standing in very specific spots and having someone point out that small parts of a non descript building in the distance are a mosque. And also in reality There had already been a mosque nearby since the 70s without incident. Then it was never mentioned again because it's fucking stupid.
