I've been slowly getting more involved over the past year. Found a group on fetlife involving dommes and male and female subs in the area. Took the plunge and went to a munch with them. Public restaurant and pleasant and perverted chat. Most in the group are a lot older than me, but I prefer that because there's so much history between all of them that I can learn from.

After a couple munches I was vetted and able to go to the private parties for that group. I have social anxiety so it's sometimes difficult to stay very long, but I often get to try on some of the hostess's things like a straitjacket and arm brace. I didn't actually play with anyone for a while, but there was never any pressure to. Just trying all this stuff and walking around in light bondage talking to people who are totally understanding is very enjoyable for me as a novice. I still wish I had a partner, most everyone in my group is more into pain than I am. But I'm able to start networking and building confidence in myself and my fetishes, and that's enough for right now.

So yeah I would definitely recommend making an FL account. I almost never post in the chats or reach out to anyone, but I can easily find any and all upcoming events in my area and groups I'm interested in. Go to a few munches, develop connections, maybe go to a party if you're up for it. Maybe you'll find someone, maybe you won't. All the same it's a wonderful feeling being able to express things like kink with other people.
