I haven't watched Madoka in forever, but wasn't it relatively low on yuri-baiting compared to similar shows? (Yuki and Togo from Yuki Yuna is a Hero are way more in love, for example). I remember Sayaka's whole subplot involved her love for a dude. Seems like a weird reason for the fandom to turn on a seemingly popular spinoff!

It leaned in harder on it at the end, and of course in the movie, but up until that point it would be hard to even say there was very much hinting at yuri. The Madoka Fandom in general is pretty laser focused on the last 3 episodes and beyond though, so a combination of that and marketing since then has caused Madoka to be seen as and become much more sapphic than it originally was.

When a show has a total of 4 male characters, including a dad, a baby, an evil transdimensional monster dog rabbit cat, and an unrequited love interest specifically designed to cause conflict, the writing is on the wall.
