Washington's defense sucks and they've had a couple of struggle wins over terrible teams. They'll never say it publicly but I still think the committee pays close attention to metrics like SP+ that factor in things like opponent strength and they rate somewhere in the 7-10 range in most that I've seen. 5 is about where they should be

Washington holds most of their opponents under their averages, and in the second halves of games they are absolutely shut down defensively, but no one watches their games so no one really knows that they just look at box scores.
