While Mario would have been better with less pop culture infusion, it's not as detrimental to the setting and immersion as it would be with a high fantasy setting like zelda. We'll have to wait and see. And I guess to be fair, the music changes in Mario were Illumination's doing. There was an original score created for the Donkey Kong Kingdom, called 'Drivin Me Bananas' that was replaced by Take On Me. And the music composer had to fight them on using the Superstar theme at the big climax.
