DB has always been light-hearted. The Cell Saga was actually a very big turn and departure from what the show normally is and unfortunately most Western fans were introduced to the show with this arc so it's what they know and it's what they like. Thots? DB had more lighthearted moments, but DBZ was a paradigm shift. The majority of people introduced to DBZ in the 90s were introduced at the beginning of the anime, which is just before Raditz comes over to fuck shit up.
