As someone who is good at math and was once a cashier in high school, I really hated when a customer tried to switch things up on me after I already punched in the total. There was something about this type of situation that really froze my mind, especially since there's added pressure to not be scammed. It's much better from their perspective to do this in two entirely separate transactions.

So I don't blame them at all and would also probably have handled the situation in the exact same way - despite this one being especially non-complicated.
