Due to the nature of my job I frequently meet new people in a business setting. It's funny I now have no clue what's socially acceptable (thanks a lot, Covid).

On the one hand, you don't know the other person's comfort level and you don't want to force them to shake hands if they prefer not to. You have to respect their comfort level, especially if they're older.

On the other hand, we now know that Covid spreads by breathing the same air so if you're close enough to shake hands, you're already exposed to the virus. Shaking hands does not increase the chance of infection.

Shaking hands by itself doesnt but people tend to rub their eyes or touch their face in some way that can lead to infection. Thats why people say not to shake hands. If you do, you should immediately wash your hands/use hand sanitizer and definitely dont rub your eyes or touch your face.
