Suppose you are a Palestinian and your house has been destroyed, members of your family killed, you have no food, no water, no electricity, and no access to medical care. When the IDF begins it's ground assault, if you have access to weapon you are probably going to shoot at them. Because you have nothing to lose at that point.

It's a calculus the Israeli government has made over and over again in the last 50 or so years. If you make a group of people's material conditions so fucking awful that they eventually will lash out you can then justify any amount of violence against them to "defend yourself".

The US did it to tribe after tribe of Native Americans. We would sign a treaty giving them exclusive access to a chunk of the land. Then settlers would encroach, with the tacit approval of the local government, and when the natives would respond to this in a violent manner the troops would be sent in to crush them. They would then be put on a reservation and told they couldn't have weapons to hunt with, but they would be supplied with food. Then food supplies would be withheld, or arrive spoiled, and the Natives would lash out, and the Government would again crush them. Repead ad nauseum and you've managed to commit to commit a genocide all under the guise of "defending youself".
