Also, I found out today that the kid saw the old man as a grandfather figure. The guy even once built a tree house for the kid. The mom never expected him to do this. He was a kindly old man to both mother and child. Then he suddenly does this. It's like conservative media drove him insane Supposedly the kid ran up to the man to say hi to him, just before the man stabbed him.
