People do fucked up shit during war. Last century you have tales and pictures of Japanese soldiers throwing babies and catching them with their bayonets, everything the Nazis did. History is rifed with atrocities committed towards civilians, and that includes children. Even some of the earlier written works contain violence towards babies, even as a form of rhetoric:

Not a single one of them must escape sheer destruction at our hands. Not even if a mother carries one in her belly and he is male, not even he should escape. All together they must be exterminated from Troy, their bodies untended and invisible. Il. 6.57-62

This is the threat the Achaeans (Greeks) put towards the Trojans in the Iliad, promising the slaughter of all males even the killing of male babies still inside their mother's bellies which has its roots in similar rhetoric found in the Near East. Not only murder but also the denying of a burial, untended and invisible, so they are completely forgotten.
