There are two different domains that the civil court system operates within: there is law, and then there is equity.

These domains are defined by the remedies available. Matters at law are defined by the use of monetary damages as the remedy, while matters in equity are defined by remedies that are actions ordered by the court, such as property distribution in divorce and injunctions in other cases (not exhaustive). Matters in equity are exclusively determined by the court without a jury.
