McCarthy himself said he didn't go to the Dems to save his job and the Dems after Sunday were uniformly pissed off at him. He knew Dems were floating the idea because he addressed it to specifically say that's a no.

Has the same energy as a dude trying to act tough then when it looks like it's gonna escalate starts telling his friends, "Hold me back! Hold me back!"

Repubs would eat a bullet before they nominated a Dem for House Speaker, so Speaker Jefferies during a GOP controlled Congress is the least likely route. They would easily keep the government shutdown over risking the safety of their families becoming targets for MAGA domestic terrorists. Not to mention it gives them an excuse to not govern.

Yup. And ultimately a non-functioning House hurts us all and wastes over 1/4 of Biden's first term. Which is why if a Republican is willing to give Dems concessions to be a moderate speaker (no Hastert Rule, can be removed if 30% of the House requests it....high enough bar to block the crazies but low enough that Dems can oust him if he betrays his word, no blocking appointments/nominations, etc...), I hope they will take the deal. Because Republicans would rather the House do nothing for 15 months than give a Democrat power.

I still don't even understand why the House needs a fucking Speaker, though. If it's got the votes, send it to the floor for debate. Shit's not hard.
