i'm not sure if i ever played l3d, but i spent a lot of time playing the original lemmings, both on pc and especially a clone for palm os. good to hear that it still has a community and development interest going.
L3D is a mixed bag. The core concepts are great, but the camera controls are shit (my clone improves this hugely) and the official levels don't make good use of the 3D aspect, most of them that aren't just mazes you have to navigate through with turners (like blockers but they turn the lemmings 90) could be reproduced in 2D with very little loss of value. "Critical Path" is the only one that comes to mind immediately as making very good use of 3D. Of course I've made a custom level pack that better explores using 3D, which is compatible with both the clone and the actual DOS game (but not with the Saturn or PS1 ports).

The community isn't as active as it once was but there's still people making levels - far far harder than anything official - and playing them.
