If the need and desire for it was a high as other countries that effectively use it, It would be in the USA. Problem is, no state government or the federal government is gonna push for that outside of metropolitan areas. I would love to not have to drive to work or other places if it was extremely convenient.

The issue is the lack of need and desire is not really...organic. Highways were built in a very different manner than how they try to build public transportation, in which a minimal amount of regular people have an insane amount of veto power to slow down projects. The externalities of cars (road costs, gas costs) are not fully priced in. It's a policy failure and if the infrastructure was there, peoples desire would be different.

But all that doesn't really matter. We are where we are, and the infrastructure should still be built up where it makes sense, in dense areas.
