There was not much to expand upon, and it more likely to ruin the established canon. Take a look at crisis core, it kinda worked but the story itself didn't add much to the main lore. I personally dislikes that Cloud's hand-me-down sword from Zack is actually a hand-me-down from another character that was never hinted to exist.
