For lots of people, it often takes time and experiences to fully separate their emotions and not grow any emotional attachment. Yeah you can be at a high chair looking down on people who have eventually caught feelings for their friends(to which their friends didn't feel the same way), but many people grow fond of those that they keep talking to.

You can be friends with someone you deem attractive, but many inexperienced people fall for said person and put them on a pedastool. And often put their time and effort into said person(that they know) of, instead of say, trying to talk to different people
