Twist my arm and I'd say offense, since most games have goals achieved, or at least achieved faster, by being proactive. That being said, I find myself being support or tank in team comps, because randos are too stupid/greedy to play otherwise, and most of my friends legitimately cannot wrap their heads around one role or the other.

Special note for fighting games: There is no such thing as being a defensive, reactive player. This is the illusion of someone who has an incomplete sense of the genre. It is a tactic you can use in certain given situations. Fighting games are a genre where there are setups such that they cannot be defended or avoided in any way, only neutralized by being interrupted before full execution. To try to play reactively and defensively as a primary style is to stay in scrub ranks forevermore. Offense is defense. Defense is offense. There is no spoon, and there is only the spoon.
