He probably should take the stand in this case. It's a bit unusual but the perjury doesn't really matter they can't "add" perjury to the existing indictment and the consequences of perjury are going to be far less severe than whatever the consequences are that he's facing now so it's his best shot to make one last appeal to emotion. And if he fails the perjury still won't matter because he'll be in jail for life.
