I remember someone on CE posted an expose probably five or six years ago, citing (among other things) Musk screaming at floor workers and firing them on the spot, or bursting into board meetings and making everyone stop and watch this really funny Monty Python sketch he'd just discovered. And I thought at the time 'yeah, I can see that being true.' The whole kids-trapped-in-a-cave debacle where he called the diver a pedophile cemented that impression.

People tend to give larger-than-life public figures the extreme benefit of the doubt; we all want to believe in meritocracy and believe that our governments and businesses aren't being run by spoiled, inept dipshits. It usually takes an ongoing catastrophic fuckup that cannot be ignored (like Elon buying Twitter) to clue people in to the true nature of these types of figureheads.
