And aspects of said prototype were used to inspire SMB2 Famicom. It wasn't a reskinning of some random game, it was bringing the Mario that was deep down all along. Shy Guys and a few other elements permeate through the series, don't diminish it's place. That said, there's debate over whether it's a dream of a play or a play of a dream.
