They've seen how bad the recent by-election results are. Swings that big on a national scale could result in a 1997-style Labour landslide. As such they're planning to hold on as long as possible in the hopes that something like an improving economy or a sudden crisis that gives Sunak a chance to look like a hero comes along and improves their chances.
