You were never silent, it was just all text based. Which meant that the options were vast, as all it took to make your character say something was writing another line of text.

That all changes when voice actors get involved and everything single thing needs to be recorded into a microphone. Its why we went from having a half dozen responses in every dialogue tree to every conversation being one of four canned responses of that good, that bad, me say joke now, and of course, byeeeeee!
