A jury can name literally any number for some types of damages. There is almost always a statute that caps the amount though, which gets sorted out after the jury's findings. The news likes to report it in this way because they make money off sensationalism.

That would make sense. It would also explain those cases where the sentence is like hundreds of years in prison. When these kind of things are decided by a jury, it stands to reason the jury sometimes consists of a bunch of children (regardless of the actual age).
