People who served used to get an affirmative action type leg up on getting hired after their service... which was pretty important considering the cutthroat condition there. Women got it, too, if they served. But feminists complained it was a discrimination against women because only a small number of women benefited (due to many not serving), where as nearly all men benefited (due to conscription). So it got cancelled. I imagine more than few men were unhappy.
