Mammals did not really evolve from reptiles though. Rather, reptiles and mammals share a common ancestor. Mammals evolve from and are synapsids ( we have a single temperal finestra), while reptiles are diapsids ( they have two). It is thought that one mammals may have come from an animal very similar to dimetrodon. They are often lumped in with dinosaurs, but they were synapsids.
