Maybe the thief sold it for a quick buck, maybe he lent it to a friend who was ignorant of the theft. The guy who was killed could be under the impression that he's the one being carjacked and drew his gun because he (thought he) was defending himself. The article did mention "alleged car thief" . Doesn't change anything in my mind.
