I beat him after an hour. The hit window of like .25 seconds was crazy. I mostly did what you posted, but got lucky and he didn't expand his bats to cover the entire screen as often that time. If I saw the red swirl where he was going to reform, I'd charge in like a maniac to try to get one hit in.

What difficulty are you playing? Glad you were able to get through it! That very narrow window of vulnerability is what makes the boss a pain in the ass and taking damage from the little bats sucks.
