I felt like it was a pretty good episode, albeit very on-the-nose with the meta humor. My only real criticisms would be

* I felt like the addition of Fry testifying in front of Nixon ruined the ending, it would have been much funnier to just end with Bender's "fade to black" line.
* Might not have been great timing to include a joke about TV writers being lazy lol

I disagree with your second one. It is absolutely the best timing for it, in context. They literally worked themselves to death in the episode, and were still considered easily replaced by a machine. At which point, in context of the episode and according to Fry, those written by Bender were terrible. It's a perfect time to showcase that view.
