Back in the day, you still had to put in a hell of a lot of work to maintain a lower standard of living. Today you have to put in often far far easier work to maintain a far higher standard of living. Here is a better way to look at it. What if you only had to work 6 hours a day. And you got 1/3 of the year off. What do you think would happen? Keep in mind you talked about office jobs that are notorious with people sitting at a screen pretending to be busy.
