Topic	I still don't believe that the original Sonic movie design was ever a thing.

Either you are mistaken, or the movie trailer for Detective Pikachu was already out by then. Oh I'm sure there were trailers for Detective Pikachu before the first ugly Sonic leaks, my point was that Sonic was obviously in development before Detective Pikachu was released so the decision wasn't based on Detective Pikachu making money.
