Here's the secret: Practice and not having a billion game options to distract you. Seriously! That was before free-to-play, cheap indies, digital downloads, etc... so you spent your $29.99- 49.99 on a SNES or Genesis game and played the fuck out of it until you mowed enough lawns or worked your weekend job enough to buy another one.
