That I can agree with. I think part of the reason that it works well in my case is because theres not a massive imbalance of power. While there are obviously situations which I have more experience and knowledge of by virtue of being older, there are also a number of situations in which she has more experience and knowledge because she is a native and I am a foreigner living in her country and come from a very different culture.
